An effective way to cover water and target above-average sized bass, a large swimbait can be an exciting way to fish, but requires a specific setup to be effective. Bassmaster Elite Series angler, Bob Downey, is here to share his preferred setup for fishing a large soft plastic swimbait. For fishing in more open water, Bob likes the new St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass in the 7'4" Heavy power, Fast action rod with 20lb Sufix Fluorocarbon and a 7.1:1 Daiwa Tatula SV TW103 casting reel. When it comes to fishing in and around shallow cover, such as reeds, cattails, and other forms of vegetation, Bob recommends stepping up your line to a 30 to 50-pound test braided line with the same rod and reel. The more powerful setup with a heavy rod allows a solid hookset and allows you to pull fish away from heavy cover with better efficiency.
