Jigging Rap Setup (Rod/Reel/Line) - Joe Ponessa

Tue, November 8, 2022

A vastly popular bait, the Rapala Jigging Rap has been a best-seller in both the ice fishing and open water fishing markets for decades. This minnow-imitating jigging lure features a winged fin at the tail that gives the Jigging Rap its signature gliding and swimming action. Today, Omnia Fishing's Joe Ponessa gives us a rundown on the proper rod, reel, and line setup for fishing a Jigging Rap in open water. When it comes to the rod, Joe prefers a spinning rod in either a 7'0" Medium-Light Power / Fast Action or a 7'0" Medium Power/Moderate-Fast Action, which provides a solid hook-set and back bone, but enough bend and play in the rod to ensure the small hooks of the Jigging Rap don't come unbuttoned while fighting fish back to the boat. The smooth drag of a Shimano Vanford 3000 is the perfect tool for the job and is spooled with 15 to 20lb Sufix 832 Braided line to a 10 to 12lb Seaguar Gold Label Fluorocarbon leader.
